My Viking Career Journey

Kento

Bar Waiter

I work as a Bar Waiter in the Hotel Department. Viking is the third cruise company I have worked for, and this is my sixth contract.

In my role, I am responsible for making and serving drinks, cleaning up and washing, and keeping the bar tidy. My duties also include inventory checks, placing orders, and restocking supplies.
Q: What part of your job energizes you the most?

It is the sense of encountering the unknown. I feel energized when I discover something new while making drinks, or when I come up with ideas I have never had before.

Q: How did you start in this role, and what steps or support did Viking provide to help you grow?

I have always loved traveling and wanted to find a way to work while seeing the world, which led me to cruise ships. In a previous career, I worked as a photographer on a cruise ship, but after stepping away for a while, I gained experience as a barista in Karuizawa, Japan, and later in New Zealand. When I decided to return to shipboard life in a different role, I came across Viking’s recruitment for the Japan season and applied.

Q: What skills or strengths have you developed since starting here?

I have deepened my overall knowledge of alcoholic beverages.

Q: How would you describe the company culture—what makes working at Viking different or rewarding?

Viking has a culture of prioritizing hospitality. I find it wonderful that the management team takes the initiative to step onto the front lines.

Q: What traits or mindset do you think are key to thrive in your role?

I believe attentiveness is essential.

Q: What do you enjoy doing outside of work that keeps you balanced or inspired?

My greatest pleasure is taking a coffee break in the ports of call.
