BASEL OFFICE - IT Senior System Engineer

Viking is a strong and dynamic company - with a growing fleet of more than 80 river ships and seven ocean vessels cruising over 100 itineraries around the world. In 2022, our guests will experience all the comfort and elegance of our award-winning fleet with two expedition ships built specifically to explore the world's most remote destinations. We will also expand our operations to the U.S. with the addition of a new Mississippi River ship.



The IT Operations in Basel guarantees a seamless operation of our EMEA Offices in Basel, London, Ancona, Wiebelsheim and Shanghai. The Team handles the entire IT Infrastructure including Network and WiFi Infrastructure, iTV System, Server and Clients of every flavor.

As a Senior Systems Engineer, you will be a key member of the IT Operations Team. You will design and implement the solutions that will drive success with our internal customers and our organization. Starting date would be as soon as possible. Due to the areas covered, there is sometimes traveling required (up to 30%).

This role is based in our Operational Headquarters in Basel, Switzerland. Please note that we can only accept applicants who are eligible to work in Switzerland or in possession of a valid work permit.



  • Availability Management
  • Monitor network security and supervise the entire network system of the organization
  • Designs information systems to be implemented according to our goals, needs and objectives
  • Responds to escalated help desk issues
  • Interacts with internal clients on all levels to help resolve IT-related issues and provides answers in a timely manner
  • Engineers Physical and Virtual Server and Client Infrastructure
  • Engineers Storage – virtual and physical
  • Manages and develops upgrades to the company's Infrastructure
  • Works with local teams in the Various Locations to help to improve existing- and implement various Systems
  • Ensures Data Security within our Offices
  • Administrate and monitor various Servers (DB / App etc.)
  • Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures
  • Develop and oversees compliance with system standards
  • Troubleshooting and attend calls for immediate repair work
  • Maintenance of Physical and Virtual Infrastructure.
  • Engineering of solutions for various project and operational needs
  • Install new / rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.
  • Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures
  • Contribute to and maintain system standards
  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups
  • Repair and recover from hardware or software failures, coordinate and communicate with impacted departments
  • Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure / add new services as necessary
  • Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required. Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required
  • Research and recommend innovative, and where possible automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide economies of scale.
  • Contribute to Service Improvement



  • Bachelor of IT and/or relevant experience
  • System Engineer certification in Microsoft and/or Unix
  • Certificate courses in various software, hardware and networking
  • C|EH or similar certification
  • SQL skills is a strong plus
  • Five years or more of relevant experience working in a similar role
  • Background in a Security Role is preferred but not a must
  • Expert in virtualization on following Platforms: VMware / Xen / Hyper-V / Azure Cloud
  • Expert for Windows Server and Windows Clients
  • Systems Engineer certification in Microsoft and Unix
  • Experienced in MS SQL
  • Very good skills in PowerShell scripting and VBA
  • Experience managing resources in Azure
  • Analytical mindset

  • Solid communication skills
  • Interpret and/or discuss information with others, which involves terminology or concepts not familiar to many people
  • Responsibilities sometimes require working evenings and weekends, sometimes without advanced notice
  • Holding a driver’s license is strongly preferred
