BASEL OFFICE - Nautical Training Manager

Viking is a strong and dynamic company - with a growing fleet of more than 80 river ships and seven ocean vessels cruising over 100 itineraries around the world. In 2022, our guests will experience all the comfort and elegance of our award-winning fleet with two expedition ships built specifically to explore the world's most remote destinations. We will also expand our operations to the U.S. with the addition of a new Mississippi River ship.




In their duties, the Nautical Training Manager contributes to the goal of zero incidents throughout the Viking fleet and reinforcement of the hospitality mindset of the Nautical crew.

The Nautical Training Manager is responsible for designing, developing, and executing all Nautical training delivered onboard our vessels and with 3rd party vendors working with the Viking set of standards. This position will be focused on training design and development of blended learning material, planning, logistics, and administration. The Nautical Training Manager will also be responsible for training delivery using face-to-face and blended learning approaches and quality assurance.


This role will be an integral part of the Nautical Operations River and report to the Senior Manager Nautical Operations. Up to 70% presence at the Head Office in Basel might be required, with the remaining 30% being used for training at remote locations mainly in Europe or anywhere Viking vessels are located.

This role is based in our Operational Head Office in Basel, Switzerland. Please note that we can only accept applicants who are eligible to work in Switzerland or in possession of a valid work permit.



Training design, development and delivery

  • Design, development and execution of the talent development program for all nautical employees
  • Design, develop, and execute repeater training for all nautical officers
  • Design, development, and execution of newcomer training for all nautical crew, in alignment with existing newcomer training programs within Viking
  • Content development and learning material design for blended learning approach (classroom training, digital learning, virtual classroom, simulator training, onboard training, coaching)
  • Providing support and coaching for nautical officers on board the ships regarding training delivery, methodology, and didactic approaches
  • Staying up to date regarding industry trends, training strategies, tools, and methodology


Project Management

  • Managing the Viking College Maritime, keeping an overview of all training and organizational needs according to the VCM vision and strategy
  • Ensure efficient administration and adequate reporting of training & development measures at all times
  • Ensure effective management of resources, including coordination of internal trainers, training equipment and material
  • Define Training & Development processes in an effective & efficient manner
  • Ensure effective use of skills & resources to produce content and develop programs to meet operational needs
  • Coordinate training needs analysis for Nautical Season Start Trainings
  • Maintaining and keeping up to date the annual training calendar and project sites


Communication and cooperation

  • Close cooperation with functional experts (internal and external) in content creation, training development, planning and logistics
  • Close cooperation with the Nautical Operations regarding prioritization of training activities, talent development programs, newcomers and repeater trainings
  • Maintain close ongoing business relations with all Departments & relevant HR partners
  • Maintain good business relationships with a trusted network of training partners in all relevant areas of expertise
  • Act as learning business partner to all department heads and proactively suggest appropriate improvement measures
  • Assist on any ad-hoc tasks as required by the Department


Quality assurance

  • Quality assurance of the Viking College Maritime: development of quality assurance standards and principles, implementation of standards in internal and external trainings



This position requires an individual capable of developing and writing training programs from scratch and delivering these programs for a diverse audience. The individual will have a proven track record in coaching, including leadership, as well as in the field of content development for face-to-face and digital learning approaches.


Apart from this, we are looking for someone with the following qualifications:

  • Relevant education in learning and development field or similar (Bachelor’s degree)
  • Experience in planning, developing, and implementing digital learning programs is a must
  • Experience in the maritime industry
  • Experience in hospitality is an asset
  • Fluent in English (written and verbal)
  • Solid communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Proactive and precise communicator
  • Communicative, inspiring and convincing personality
  • Flexibility and willingness for co-operation and teamwork
  • Strong business acumen, exceptional work ethic, and customer orientation
  • Excellent planning and organizational abilities
  • Reliable and stress-resistant
  • Experience in delivering face to face training in a stressful and time-pressured environment
  • Must be able to link theory to practice via standardized and ad-hoc industry examples
  • Proven track record in leadership coaching
  • Must be able to travel internationally up to 30% of the time
  • Functional expertise is an asset
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Teams, Adobe Connect, and Articulate 360 for training purposes is an asset
