BASEL OFFICE - Vice President Environmental Affairs

PURPOSE OF POSITION

 

The Vice President Environmental Affairs is responsible for any aspects related to Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability within Viking Cruises’ fleet of over 70 river vessels and 6 ocean vessels (growing in both divisions). He/she will work closely with our Executive Management & board members on the strategy of Viking. He/she will be leading implementation of environmental aspects (Technical and Hospitality) of the strategy. This key role for the future of Viking is based in our Operational Head Office in Basel, Switzerland and will have a direct reporting line to the chairman of the group.   

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Group responsibility and key influencer for any aspect related to Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability
  • Development of strategic framework and support of operations teams implementing a comprehensive environmental program
  • Development of (long term) fuel & energy efficiency strategy considering cutting edge research, social trends, impact on guest experience and regulatory framework
  • Identification and evaluation of investment opportunities based on economical and ecological aspects
  • Responsible to ensure that all our investments, services and products are in line with global and regional environmental laws and regulations
  • Responsible for waste management, water conservation, Ballast water Management, Water treatment and Recycling (i.e. plastic bottles/cleaning)
  • Ensuring that the expedition product is environmentally fully compliant and that we are recognized as a leading edge company when it comes to environmental considerations
  • Relationship/Network Management with governmental bodies, industry and relevant associations

 

QUALIFICATION PROFILE

 

  • Master degree in Business Administration or Master in Environmental Studies from an renowned university
  • At least 10 years of practical experience in international Sustainability, Recycling and Corporate Social Responsibility projects
  • Understanding of/Experience in the hospitality sector or in the cruise industry (US experience an asset as our guests are mainly from the US)
  • Proven track-record of successful and sustainable environmental project implementation with hands-on involvement (ideally Plastic Recycling, Waste Management)
  • Experienced and emphatic executive leader (ideally on Corporate C-Level) with ability to communicate on Chairman/Government level with self-confidence and assertiveness
  • Ability to assess investment opportunities from an owner’s point of view with the necessary financial and technical skills
  • Be a strong communicator and possess an ability to develop trusting and credible relationships at all levels of the business and have a sense for marketing
  • Access to an interesting network of environmental experts, up-to-date research and projects
  • Not afraid to ask fundamental questions or challenge conventions at all management levels
  • Excellent English skills (written & verbal), native speaker an asset
  • Stress resistant and calm under pressure
  • Excellent computer skills; must be able to work independently
