BOSTON OFFICE - Director Purchasing Mississippi River Ships



In August 2022, Viking will expand its destination-focused travel experiences with the launch of Mississippi River cruises. Its first 386-guests custom vessel, Viking Mississippi, will sail voyages on the Lower and Upper Mississippi, ranging from 8 – 15 days, between New Orleans and St. Paul. Viking’s arrival will bring modern river cruising to the Mississippi and will represent a major commitment to tourism and economic development in many communities along the river. The new state-of-the-art Viking Mississippi is inspired by Viking’s award-winning river and ocean ships and will feature clean Scandinavian design, as well as public spaces that are familiar to guests but that have been reimagined for Mississippi River voyages. Purpose-built for the Mississippi and currently under construction in Louisiana, the five-deck ship’s cutting-edge design, expansive windows and comfortable amenities will make it the largest and most modern cruise ship in the region.


The Director Purchasing Mississippi is responsible for leading the sourcing team responsible for all Hotel related items, including Food, Beverage, Consumable, and Durables, as well as Freight services to Viking’s first vessel on the Mississippi river.


The main responsibility of this role is to deliver secure, stable and reliable sourcing of all Hotel related items at the lowest total cost to Viking. The responsibilities include planning all sourcing activities, leading the category sourcing roadmap, maintain and build vendor relationships, and delivery continued value to the business through optimizing the total cost of ownership for all sourced items. Besides being a strategic position responsibilities include vendor and product identification, product specification together with the business, running tenders and RFQs, vendor negotiations, sourcing and contracting, plan the loading schedules and ports for the fleet, and establish and update purchasing policies and procedures.


In addition, he/she will lead strategic initiatives to improve sourcing operations, end-to-end sourcing processes and other projects to drive continues improvement into Viking’s sourcing operation.


This role will be located in Boston/USA. The Director Purchasing Mississippi will report directly into the Senior Vice President Operations and has a functional reporting line to the VP of Purchasing located in Basel/Switzerland. The Director Purchasing Mississippi is a stand-alone role being responsible for starting the operation from a procurement perspective and to successfully launch the first vessel. Once closer to operating the ship(s) the option of hiring additional team members can be considered.

• Drive continuous improvements/reductions to the total cost of ownership of sourced items across all categories while ensuring that all vendor deliver the agreed quality on a consistent, reliable basis.

• Identify products and vendors, define product specification together with the Onboard and Culinary teams, plan all sourcing activities. Launch tenders and RFQs.

• Lead the category sourcing roadmap.

• Work with the Onboard and Culinary teams to identify new products and define product specification together with the sourcing team.

• Conduct vendor negotiations and contracting, and maintain and build vendor relationships. Conduct periodic spend and market analytics.

• Drive quarterly vendor performance reviews and work with the vendors to continuously improve day-to-day operations.

• Ensure all vendor contracts and agreements are in-line with policy and sourcing activities are in-line with regulatory requirements. Follow up on service level issues with all vendors.

• Plan the loading schedule for the fleet.

• Cooperate closely with the onboard operations team on resolving day to day operational issues.

• Works closely with the shipboard team and the suppliers to ensure that all products needed for the operation are on board at all times.

• Support the ships in case of deviations, delayed deliveries or emergency orders, to ensure the ships have all the supplies they need and to work with both the operations teams and our vendors to eliminate potential root causes for deviations, emergency orders, excess spend, and waste.

• Comply with all corporate and ship standards and procedures, including follows all policies, and safety and environmental procedures.




• +7 years’ of relevant experience in purchasing for the Hotel or Cruise line industry.

• Minimum 2 years of experience leading a team of 3-10 employees as a Director, Senior Manager or similar.

• Previous experience sourcing F&B categories.

• Analytical mindset with a strong knowledge of excel.

• A self-starter with a can-do mindset, with complete attention to detail. A can-do mindset, with a strong focus on delivery a superior guest experience as well as a focus on costs and budgets.

• Flexibility and stress resistance, team player, commitment, positive personality, professional appearance.

• Excellent written and spoken communication skills. Fluent in English, additional languages a plus.

• Diploma or Degree from internationally recognized hotel school or university is a plus.

• Some periodic travel to vendors, ships and overseas is required.

• Must have experience organizing logistics (via sea, air road) on a global scale
