RIVER - NAUTIC - 1st OFFICER 

Viking is a strong and dynamic company with a growing fleet of more than 80 river ships and seven ocean vessels cruising over 100 itineraries around the world. In 2022, Viking guests could enjoy the comfort and elegance of our award-winning fleet with 8 new river ships, two expedition ships built specifically to explore the world's most remote destinations, and a unique Mississippi River ship in the U.S. In 2023 Viking celebrates the inaugural season of our 8th Ocean vessel: the Viking Neptune and the building of our 9th Ocean vessel: the Viking Saturn.

 

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

 

  • Safe navigation in compliance with all statutory regulations
  • To make sure that the guests feel comfortable
  • To be a role model for the entire crew
  • Deputy of the Captain

 

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES


Security

  • Overall responsibility for safety on board the ship
  • Compliance with the guidelines, instructions (nautical manual) and laws
  • Co-responsible for the impeccable cleanliness, hygiene and order on board
  • Testing, operation and control of all safety devices (fire extinguishers, hoses, etc.)
  • Planning and execution of the safety exercises
  • Managing and controlling the watch book (Night Watch)
  • Train new employees and explain their function within the safety role

 

Additional duties

  • Train employees. Ensure Viking’s grooming standards are followed at all times
  • Train new skippers, train and provide a patent to the 2nd Officer
  • Conduct frequently scheduled ship inspections
  • Participation in meetings and company relevant trainings
  • Good contact with the authorities, WSP, ports, etc.
  • Assignment and control of shipping work in the nautical field
  • Manage sundeck according to safety needs and guests' expectations
  • Regular checks of mooring lines’ and wires’ condition on a weekly basis
  • Ensure crew is wearing personal protective equipment - life jacket, safety shoes, safety helmet


Steering

  • Compliance with timetables and lock times to avoid incidents
  • Cost-conscious use of all energy resources (gas oil, lubricants, etc.)
  • Ensure a professional, safe ship operation

 

YOUR PROFILE

 

  • At least 2 years of work experience as a 2nd Officer
  • Interested in further education (eg. certificate extension, language skills)
  • Independent and flexible
  • Decisive and assertive
  • Strong team worker and able to motivate the crew
  • Shows ambition and initiative; perseverant

 

Depending in which geographical area you are eligible to sail you need to fulfill the following obligatory requirements:


Rhine
- Rhine license km 1’000 – 500 (Amsterdam – Mainz)
- Radar
- VHF
- Safety Expert (Sachkunde)
- Languages: German and English (mandatory), Dutch and French are an asset

 

Danube
- Danube license km 1’640 – 2’370 (Regensburg – Budapest)
- Radar
- VHF
- Safety Expert (Sachkunde)
- Languages: German and English (mandatory), Russian is an asset

 

France
- Longeur illimitée
- Radar
- VHF
- Safety Expert (expert)
- Languages: French and English (mandatory), German is an asset
